07.19.2010 Goldpointe Criterium 2010

Now that it is full on Tour de France fever, what better time to show off some cycling photographs I made back in the end of June.
I had my first opportunity this year to photograph the Goldpointe Criterium Cycling Race in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This is the second year that Cedar Rapids and Hawkeye Bicycling Association are hosting the event. This race is also the Iowa State Cycling Championship race. It is great to see some activity in downtown Cedar Rapids after their devastating flood in 2008. Much of downtown was underwater and heavily damaged and it is really nice to see some life coming back to their city. The cyclists actually rides over the Cedar River twice across two bridges. If you can imagine the water being over those bridges in the shots, you'd be back in 2008. I saw some great racing and had some really nice light to work with in the evening. My mom also came along with me to try her hand at some cycling photography. We both had a nice time and I hope we can make it back next year to capture this event together again.
Normally, I photograph the Proctor Cycling Classic in Peoria. The races are on the same day, so this year I opted to head over to Iowa. I really like both events, so I hope that in future years I will be able to capture both. If you want a look back at last year's Proctor shots, click here.
On to the racing!
